State Plans to Appeal FEMA Decision

The state will appeal a decision by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which denied Hawaii's request for a major disaster declaration. The declaration would have provided federal aid to those affected by damage from Tropical Storm Iselle. The appeal must be filed within 30 days. Governor Neil Abercrombie and Big Island Mayor Billy Kenoi released a joint statement saying that in the meantime, county, state and other federal agencies, as well as nonprofit organizations, are providing support under their own authorities.
